Frank Mir - "I am as good on the ground as dos Santos is on his feet." - You may not realize that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir has been blogging about his upcoming fight against current champion Junior dos Santos on Yahoo. Whether you knew that or not, unless you're living in an MMA shell, you were certainly aware of the fact that Mir wants their upcoming ...

Rafael Feijao Defeats Mike Kyle by Guillotine Choke - Mike Kyle hits like a truck. He's a dangerous fighter. Along with that, the first time he threw down with Rafael Feijao Cavalcante, he won by way of TKO. Fast forward to the present day. Would Feijao come through this time, or would Kyle once again take him out? Get ready, get set, go! Early on, Feijao came inside and dropped Kyle with a knee. From there, Kyle got up, where Feijao jumped up and slapped on the guillotine choke. Rather than drop to the canvas, Kyle chose to stand up with him on his neck for a while before attempting to escape via slam. Didn't work. Instead, Kyle tapped. Rafael Feijao Cavalcante defeats Mike Kyle via guillotine choke at 33 seconds of round one. More Articles Barnett-Cormier Results ...

Donald Cerrone Defeats Jeremy Stephens by Unanimous Decision - Jeremy Stephens vs. Donald Cerrone at the UFC on Fuel 3. Anyone else smell a knockout? Here's how it all went down. Early on, Stephens landed a low kick, then an uppercut as Cerrone came inside. Another low kick from Stephens landed. Then Cerrone hit home with a low kick of his own. A quick right hand from Stephens found its mark; Cerrone followed it up with a hard low kick. "The Cowboy" is starting out slowly. But then as they neared the three minute mark, Cerrone began changing his rhythm, coming forward with leg and hand strike combinations before dropping out of harm's way again. And from there, he began gaining confidence and hitting home with sharper strikes of the same variety, ending the stanza with a flying knee. Cerrone definitely took round one. The second round saw Cerrone land tons of kicks, hands, and everything. And after a combination that ended with a left uppercut, Stephens was clearly hurt. Though Stephens recovere...

Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader at the UFC on FOX 4 - Karate vs. Wrestling in the Modern Era - Back on November 12, 1993, the purest display of martial arts style vs. martial arts style took place. That's right- we're talking about UFC 1. At the time, competitors pretty much knew their own discipline and no other. Boxing, karate, and, of course, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu were on display. As we all know now, those early UFC's proved the worth of grappling arts like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling. Meanwhile, they left many with a bad taste i...

Mas Oyama and the Difference With Modern Traditional Martial Arts Practitioners - I once read a book entitled Me, Chi, and Bruce Lee by Brian Preston. It was an entertaining martial arts read about a self-proclaimed "spineless wuss" (Preston) who embarks on a quest to achieve a black belt within one year. Along the way, he travels the world meeting up with martial artists, instructors, and fighters like Sifu Bob, Royce Gracie, Jeff Monson, Jarek Szymanski and more on his path towards martial arts enlightenment. In the book, Preston questioned Szymanski, a man extremely skilled and knowledgeable in the ...

Frank Mir to Fight Junior dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight Belt - Yes, Alistair Overeem will still plead his case to NSAC regarding his testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio of 14:1 on Tuesday. But that won't keep him on the UFC 146 fight card, nor will it promise him another shot at current UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos. Overeem has now been pulled from the UFC 146 main event in favor of former champion Frank Mir....

Matt Brown Defeats Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson by Unanimous Decision at UFC 145 - Coming into his UFC 145 bout against Matt Brown, everyone simply knew Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson as that new karate fighter in the UFC. Of course, with karate still somewhat stigmatized as less than useful in the sport of mixed martial arts, there was some pressure on Thompson to do well. Wondering how it all went down? You've come to the right place. Early in round one, Thompson landed a sid...

Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki Bellator 66 Results - Former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez has only lost twice since July of 2007. One of those losses came to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu superstar Shinya Aoki at K-1 - Dynamite!! Power of Courage 2008. Simply put, the two entered the ring, and only 92 seconds later they left with Aoki taking home victory by way of heel hook. Enter 2012 and Bellator 66. Alvarez, coming off of a loss to Michael Chandler, really needed a victory badly to reaffirm his top lightweight status. Aoki, on the other hand, could once and for all prove to be a better fighter than his counterpart. Alvarez landed a punch to the body and several grazing shots early in round one.  Alvarez then hit home with two more body punches over time....

Kemalism ˇ Perry Anderson: After the Ottomans - 'The greatest single truth to declare itself in the wake of 1989,' J.G.A. Pocock wrote two years afterwards,is that the frontiers of 'Europe' towards the east are everywhere open and indeterminate. 'Europe', it can now be seen, is not a continent - as in the ancient geographers' dream - but a subcontinent: a peninsula of the Eurasian landmass, like India in being inhabited by a highly distinctive chain of interacting cultures, but unlike it in la...

Like a Thunderbolt ˇ Sheila Fitzpatrick: Solzhenitsyn's Mission - 'Lives of Remarkable Men' was a series established by Maxim Gorky in the 1930s so that the Soviet Union might know its heroes. It's ironic that Liudmila Saraskina's deeply admiring biography of the David who challenged the Soviet Goliath should now appear under its imprint. As Saraskina tells the story, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, a Russian patriot and Orthodox Christian, was a man with a mission from the first. Unswerving, uncompromising, beset by p...

What Works Doesn't Work ˇ Ross McKibbin: Politics without Ideas - In 1964, Harold Wilson described the record of the (outgoing) Conservative government as '13 wasted years'. If the present Parliament lasts its full term - as seems likely - the electorate will be asked to pass judgment on 13 years of Labour rule. Voters today seem to have the same view of Labour as Wilson had of the Tories all those years ago. Many who once wished Labour well are now wondering whether they can vote Labour at all, or whether they...

What Condoleezza Said ˇ Tony Wood: Why Did Saakashvili Do It? - The conflict in South Ossetia has produced a cloud of rhetoric that seems to have grown in inverse proportion to the intensity of fighting on the ground. Once the outcome became clear - a crushing Russian military victory - Cold War imagery flooded the Western press. Far more than the status of a tiny mountainous enclave in the South Caucasus was said to be at stake: not only was Georgia's territorial integrity imperilled by Russian tyranny, but ...

Move Your Head and the Picture Changes ˇ Jenny Turner on Helen DeWitt - Some years ago, the novelist David Foster Wallace submitted himself to a long television interview with Charlie Rose, the PBS chat-show host. It was a terrific performance, and in it Wallace talked about why, in much of his work, narrative is split into body-text and footnotes:There's a way, it seems to me, that reality's fractured right now, at least the reality that I live in. And the difficulty about . . . writing about that reality is that te...

Just Two Clicks ˇ Jonathan Raban: The Virtual Life of Neil Entwistle - As Barack Obama never tires of saying, America is a country where 'ordinary people can do extraordinary things.' In January 2006, Neil Entwistle, a seemingly ordinary 27-year-old Englishman with an honours degree from the University of York, who had been living in the US for barely four months, shot dead his American wife, Rachel, and their baby daughter, Lillian, with a long-barrelled Colt .22 revolver borrowed from his father-in-law's gun colle...

A Man or a Girl's Blouse? ˇ Jeremy Harding: Serbia after Karadzic - At the time of the parliamentary elections in Serbia earlier this summer, the possibility that Radovan Karadzic, once the leader of the Bosnian Serbs, might be handed over to stand trial at The Hague seemed remote. The acquittal of the former KLA leader Ramush Haradinaj in April had stunned opinion in Serbia and added to the sense that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was a Serb-grinding machine which spat out Bosnian...

Past Its Peak ˇ Michael Klare on the Oil Crisis - Unlike the oil 'shocks' of the 1970s, the current energy crisis is almost certain to be long-lasting. None of the quick fixes proposed by pundits and politicians - drilling in protected wilderness and maritime areas, curbs on commodity speculators, pressure on members of Opec to increase output - is likely to have much impact. In 1973-74 and again in 1979-80, events in the Middle East led to a sharp reduction in the flow of oil from the Persian G...

Madame Matisse's Hat ˇ T.J. Clark: On Matisse - Henri Matisse's portrait of his wife, Amélie Parayre, was first shown at the Salon d'Automne in 1905. The catalogue called it simply La Femme au chapeau. Journalists soon decided (or pretended) that Matisse's painting was scandalous, and the public turned up in droves to make fun of it. So far so predictable: the script was forty years old. But on 15 November something unusual happened. Two paragraphs of real and vehement criticism appeared in th...
